MY STORY

MOTHER & NATURE

Hi  I'm Liz Berwick, busy mum of two lively sons, nature lover, foodie, francophone and a bit of a hippy at heart.

I love reading, gardening, getting out in Mother Nature, and even a spot of wild swimming with friends.

#FOODIE

I LOVE FOOD! Not just eating it, but learning about it and making it. Creating new recipes, perfecting tried and tested ones, and switching them up with a bit of a twist, are my favourite things to do and really spark my passion.

At home I'm a dab hand at Indian cooking and love whipping up a curry or two for family and friends. I'm also an enthusiastic bread-maker and have enjoyed experimenting with live foods such as kombucha and sauerkraut over the past few years.

I have always been passionate about baking and when my eldest child turned 10 months old, I knew I didn't want to go back to a regular job again. I had always wanted to run my own business, and this seemed the perfect time. I set up Simply Scrumptious Cupcakes from my Staffordshire kitchen and began baking  for local customers and businesses. I expanded into baking wedding cakes and cupcake towers too.

My favourite bakes are the ones that don't just look pretty, but are simply scrumptious too. My top cake would have to be a super zingy lemon drizzle.

EDUCATOR

Having trained to be a French teacher and as eldest sister to twins, I expect sharing what I know is part of my nature! I began running cupcake decorating workshops in 2012 and it's part of the business that I never tire of! I now offer 1:1 baking and decorating tuition, alongside my group Cupcake Masterclasses. This year I am excited to be providing online tutorials and a Monthly Baking Subscription with Liz Berwick Cake Academy.

BUSINESS MENTOR

I am really passionate about entrepreneurship and love sharing and supporting other businesses and seeing them thrive. I've always been about collaboration, rather than competition. With a diverse business background and 11 years running Simply Scrumptious Cupcakes under my belt , I'm helping other bakers who want to follow their dream of running their very own cake business.

FORAGER

During lockdown, I began to forage most days. It got me and the kids out of the house for a well-needed change of scenery, but also gave me the time to see the hidden treasures in our local environment. I used pressed, crystallized and dried flowers in my baking; dehydrated seeds and made powders and teas for use later in the year; tinctures and syrups for home remedies; created delicious jams, jellies and cordials; plus some of the most delicious hedgerow sorbet!   I even began to love and embrace edible weeds growing in my garden!

IN HARMONY WITH NATURE

I am really passionate about sustainability and our connection with nature. I have always tried to source locally: choosing ethically and environmentally sustainable produce, and organic ingredients where possible. This runs true for my home life as much as my business. In 2018 I switched to organic ingredients for my cakes. I use around 76% organic ingredients currently, and choose free-range, British and Fairtrade where possible too. I'm a wee eco-warrior at heart!

I have been working with Weleda for 6 years as a Wellbeing Advisor now and really believe that their anthroposophical values reflect my own. Weleda put people and planet before profit. Their green credentials are unrivalled, since 1921. I've developed an in-depth knowledge of their biodynamically-grown ingredients, certified natural, organic products and natural medicines and we use the products as a family every day.

WILD WOMAN

I have been tracking her menstrual cycle since my teens, but became truly switched on to menstruality in 2015 after the birth of my youngest child. With such a hectic lifestyle, I find checking in each day with her tendencies a really grounding practice. In 2019, she entered one of her friend Susanna Guest's workshops to 'dive deeper' into the wisdom of our cyclical ways in a two-year long quest with a group of women. At Winter Solstice 2020, we discovered that we were both struggling to find the right menstrual cycle journal: One that was feminine and beautiful, that encompassed the inner cycles as well as the lunar phases and the seasons. I wanted a journal that allowed creativity and worked for women whose cycles were not the 'normal' 28 days, or were going through menopause. It was then that we decided to create our own. Nine months on and the Wild Wisdom Journal was born!

Available to purchase now, every journal sold supports the planting of a tree and working towards eradicating period poverty.
